Installing Squid3 on Ubuntu 12.04

First install Squid server:

sudo apt-get install squid

Prior to editing the configuration file, you should make a copy of the original file and protect it from writing so you will have the original settings as a reference, and to re-use as necessary.

sudo cp /etc/squid3/squid.conf /etc/squid3/squid.conf.original
sudo chmod a-w /etc/squid/squid.conf.original

Now edit the config file

sudo nano /etc/squid3/squid.conf

I personally like to control proxy access via the IPTables firewall, but you can create you own ip limiting acl’s as required:

acl everyone src 0.0.0.0/0
http_access allow all

Now restart Squid to apply the config

sudo service squid3 restart
